{"id":599,"date":"2024-08-29T09:54:55","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T07:54:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.ellistat.com\/?p=599"},"modified":"2025-02-05T09:55:42","modified_gmt":"2025-02-05T08:55:42","slug":"reliability-weibulls-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/en\/reliability-weibulls-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Reliability and the Weibull Distribution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Weibull distribution is most often used to model reliability data.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/en\/data-analysis-solutions\/\">Ellistat's Data Analysis module&nbsp;<\/a>allows you to perform these analyses with ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Definitions: Reliability, the Weibull Distribution, Failure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reliability<\/strong>:<br>Reliability is the ability of an entity to perform a required function, under given conditions, during a given time interval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Failure:<\/strong><br>Failure is the end of a device's ability to perform an expected function. It may be partial (deterioration in performance) or total (end of function).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>R(t)<\/strong>Probability that an entity E is non-defaulting over the time span [0 ; t ], assuming it is non-defaulting at time t = 0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>F(t)<\/strong>F(t) is the cumulative function of failures \u00e8 F(t) = 1 - R(t)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Probability density<\/strong>\u00a0f(t) represents the product failure rate, i.e. the probability that a product will fail over the time interval [t,t+dt].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u03bb(t) or failure rate :\u00a0<\/strong>\u03bb(t) represents the product failure rate, i.e. the probability that a product will fail over the time interval [t,t+dt] knowing that it did not fail at time t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u03bb(t) decreases<\/strong>&nbsp;Defect rate decreases over time, generally corresponding to early defects. Products with intrinsic defects deteriorate rapidly, while other products last much longer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u03bb(t) constant<\/strong>&nbsp;The failure rate does not depend on time. There is just as much risk of a product failing at time t, whatever its lifetime. These are intrinsic failures. This is the type of failure often found in electronic products.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u03bb(t) increases<\/strong>&nbsp;The failure rate increases over time. The risk of a product failing increases with the product's lifespan. This is the end of the product's life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MTTF (Mean Time To Failure)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MTTF, more commonly used in Product Reliability, is the average time to first failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is the average of the time intervals between two failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Weibull Distribution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To model a product's failure rate, you need to be able to model multiple types of failure:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Exemple-de-loi-1.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1146\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>For this reason, the Weibull distribution is mainly used, as it allows for great variability in shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to its great flexibility, the Weibull distribution can be used to model the behavior of many types of failure, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The breaking strength of components or the effort required to fatigue metals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The failure time of an electronic component<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Failure time for items used outdoors, such as car tires<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Systems that fail when the weakest component in the system fails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Weibull distribution can also be used to model the behavior of different life situations of the same component.<br>The Weibull distribution function is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span class=\"wp-katex-eq\" data-display=\"false\">R\\left( t \\right)=e-\\left( \\frac{t-\\delta}{\\phi} \\right)^{\\beta}<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has 3 parameters:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span class=\"wp-katex-eq\" data-display=\"false\">\\beta<\/span>: shape parameter\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u03b8 : scaling parameter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"wp-katex-eq\" data-display=\"false\">\\delta<\/span>: delay parameter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>\u03b2<\/em>: shape parameter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It allows the shape of the distribution to be adapted to be as close as possible to the observed failure rate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Wiebull-beta-2.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1147\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u03b2<\/em>=1: Failure rate is constant (<em>\u03bb<\/em>&nbsp;constant)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/wiebull-beta-3.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1148\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u03b2<\/em>&gt;1: Failure rate increases over time (<em>\u03bb<\/em>&nbsp;increases - product end-of-life)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u03b8: scaling parameter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The parameter \u03b8 is used to adjust the scale of the distribution law to the scale of the problem found, for example :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Weibull-5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1151\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure occurs around t = 90.4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Weibull-5-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1154\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure occurs around t = 904<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>\u03b4<\/em>: delay parameter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The parameter \u03b4 allows the distribution to be shifted by one parameter \u03b4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Weibull-6.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1152\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u0392 = 3.6 - \u03b8 = 100, \u03b4 = 0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure occurs around t = 90.4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/clooma.ai\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/Weibull-7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1153\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u0392 = 3.6 - \u03b8 = 100, \u03b4 = 100<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure occurs around t = 190.4<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loi_de_Weibull\">Find out more about the Weibull distribution.<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Weibull's law is most often used to model reliability data.
